Dreaming of a “Coolcation”? This Swedish Cottage Could Be Your Summer Sanctuary

Ciao! I got back from Rome late last night after a really fabulous few days. I absolutely love that city — it feels like living inside a museum. Just incredible. Have you ever been? One thing I really noticed this time was just how hot it was though. After living in Sweden for 22 years, I’m definitely not as heat-resistant as I once was — and 36°C (that’s about 97°F!) had us clinging to the nearest gelato boutique at every turn! On the way home, I was reading about how Scandinavia is becoming a hot summer destination for a so-called “coolcation” — and I totally get it. The air is fresh, and you can do things without melting (even if you do need a raincoat or maybe even a hat and gloves, depending on what the Norse weather gods decide!). So, what do you think about your very own Swedish summer cottage? There's one currently for sale that looks just perfect — nestled among lilac bushes and forest, with a cool lake nearby for swimming when the thermometer starts creeping up. I personally love the look of the verandah; I can already imagine myself in the wicker chair, soaking up the birdsong. The interior feels like a step back in time — a deep green kitchen, charming vintage wallpaper (even on the cupboard doors!), and sweet little touches of Swedish folk style in every corner, no doubt passed down through the family for generations. A summer filled with card games, foraging, good food, and complete relaxation? That sounds like bliss to me, I hope you feel inspired too! This cottage really took me back in time — a few elements reminded me of my grandmother’s house! Did you feel nostalgic seeing these pictures too? It was also refreshing to see a different shade of green in the kitchen, especially with sage green being so popular lately. Was there anything in particular that stood out to you? If you feel like a 'coolcation' this year, you can find a load of Scandinavian Airbnb and holiday rentals in the archives.  Happy Monday, friends! I hope you have a great start to the week!  Niki Styling Åsa Copparstad for Historiska hem

Beautiful shades of green in interiors of 100-year-old cottage in Sweden

Almost every Swede can tell a story about how they return to the country to their roots after living in a big city for a while. The owner of this cottage 2-hour drive from Goteborg, Marie, is no exception – a few years ago she bought a 100-year-old house in the village where she grew up. The traditional yellow house with a beautiful veranda was the most beautiful in the entire area, and Marie did not even suspect that it could be her own. After buying it, she put her whole soul into its restoration and now enjoys every minute of life in this beautiful home. Beautiful white dacha surrounded by greenery

White inside out, this lovely wooden cottage in England is literally immersed in lush greenery. Painted wood is the main finishing material for both the facade and inner walls, while the interiors are replete with vintage furniture and charming decorative details. In terms of style, this home is a cozy mix of English, French and American country schools. Among other things, we would especially praise the inner garden with outdoor furniture and a wonderful interaction with living plants. Beauty! Tiny wooden cottage in Sweden (24 sqm)

The total area of this Swedish cottage is an unimaginable 24 sqm, but inside you definitely do not feel constrained or limited. The space of the house is excellently planned, has a large amount of natural light, and the bedroom on the mezzanine also provides the necessary level of privacy. In addition, an important feature of the house is the floor-to-ceiling window in the living room, through which one can access a small open terrace. A great option for a country cottage! From small city apartment to cozy country cottage: home in Sweden

Linnea and Oscar lived in a cramped studio apartment in Stockholm until one fine summer day a few years ago when they decided that something needed to change. At first, the couple just wanted to rent a cottage in the countryside for several months, but when they saw this old wooden house in a traditional style an hour’s drive from the city, they fell in love with it and without hesitation decided to completely change their lifestyle. Now the family has the opportunity to live outdoors, surrounded by greenery, grow vegetables and fruits, and enjoy the peace and tranquility of nature. Cozy weekend cottage in Martha’s Vineyard

This country house with relaxing interiors was built just a couple of years ago, but it looks like a traditional American weekend getaway. Building from scratch gave the owners and designers a number of advantages – first of all, the opportunity to perfectly plan the interior space of the house for the needs of a family that often receives guests and throws parties. The interior decor here is dominated by natural materials and tones, which allowed the designer to achieve a sense of timeless living. Beauty! City Escape: An Allotment Cottage Oasis Tucked Away in Gothenburg

When I look for homes to feature here on My Scandinavian Home, I’m naturally a little dictated by the season. In the property market, winter is all about selling flats, while now, in late spring, it’s all about houses and summer cottages with nature on their doorstep. And just like you saw in Wednesday’s post, it’s also the season for the charming allotment cottage. So, indulge me a little this Friday while I share another lovely kolonistuga with you – tucked away in a tranquil corner of Änggården’s growers’ association, a green oasis in the heart of Gothenburg. This little cabin is only 25 square metres (269 square feet), but the outdoor space plays a big role too, with its expansive terrace, tables and chairs, and even a pizza oven. Inside, the green interior mirrors its lush surroundings. There’s enough space for a kitchen, dining area, and a sofabed, making it the perfect urban escape and one of those rare gems that seldom come on the market. Ready to dream this weekend? Can you imagine sitting here with your closest friends, sipping wine under the string lights this evening? Maybe a board of cheeses around the fire… or perhaps pizza? (It would be rude not to make the most of that outdoor oven, after all!) Lovely. It may be simple, but sometimes, you really don’t need much more than that. Do you agree? It’s also the perfect place to get into a bit of gardening – I’m sure the soil here is far more forgiving than the sandpit I’m currently battling with at our summer cottage (yikes!). You can see more inspiring allotment cottages here, and if you’re in the mood for a little more city living, don’t miss these Gothenburg apartment tours:  Izard's earthy green apartment (one of the most popular tours of the year).  A beautiful Gothenburg apartment with a hint of English style Inside Anna's coastal home on an island just outside Gothenburg Thank you so much for all your thoughtful and interesting comments this week. I’m really looking forward to taking a bit of time out this weekend to reply to each one. You make this such a warm and welcoming community, and your insights truly add so much to every post. A Charming Swedish Allotment Cottage in the Heart of the City

While many Swedes head to the coast or countryside in summertime, there’s another delightful retreat that truly comes into its own come spring – the allotment cottage! These charming little cottages are tucked away in garden communities – often right in the heart of the city. They offer a unique blend of urban living and nature, where you can grow and harvest your own flowers, fruit and veg just a short cycle from home. You can stay there from spring to autumn, after which the water is turned off for the season. Despite their simplicity, they’re incredibly cosy – typically featuring a small kitchen, dining area, sitting room, and a place to sleep. They're perfect for spending a few days at a time tending your garden and enjoying a slower pace of life. This pretty example on 'The Pea Trail' in Slottskogskolonin in the cetnre of Gothenburg offers a glimpse into the quintessential Swedish allotment cottage – and guess what? It’s for sale! Oh, the possibilities… Enjoy the tour! Although it’s pared back, I can really see the charm and potential in this lovely cottage. It offers the best of both worlds – a countryside feel right in the city's heart! Can you imagine owning an allotment cottage? And are you into growing your own fruit and veg? This year I’m growing cucumbers and tomatoes from seed – they’re looking good so far, so here’s hoping we’ll be enjoying fresh summer salads before long! Let’s peek at a few more beautiful allotment cottages today – who knows, you might find your dream plot: This swedish allotment is a true summer oasis - see the tour once the new owners moved in here.  Charming details in a Danish allotment A Swedish allotment in summertime A charming allotment cottage in Malmö Happy Wednesday!
